Eco-biological Soil Assessment: Analytical Approaches through Molecular Methods
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Soil organisms facilitate key ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition, and also influence soil porosity and water infiltration through the production of bacterial polymers and fungal hyphae that hold soil particles together to form aggregates [1, 2]. Rhizosphere microorganisms can greatly influence the ability of a plant to acquire macroand micronutrients. This may occur as a direct consequence of symbiotic associations between plant roots and microorganisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, through symbiotic and associative interactions such as the fixation of N2 by the root-associated bacteria Rhizobium spp., Azospirillum, Azotobacter, or Beijerinckia spp. [3], or through trophic interactions, such as the excretion of nutrients by the microbial feeders protozoa and nematodes [4]. Through these interactions, soil organisms powerfully affect crop growth and yield. Soil management strategies should aim to support and enable soil biota to carry out these key ecosystem functions to assure long-term soil fertility and sustained crop production. In order to understand better how soil management practices influence soil biota and their interactions with plant roots, appropriate methods are urgently needed to detect, enumerate and characterize them.

Exposure Assessment to Environmental Pollutants in Human Health Risk Assessment Studies; Overview on New Approaches
Background & objectives: Because of human exposure to various environmental risk factors during the lifetime, the actual exposure estimation has been considered as one of the most important challenges for researchers and decision makers. Considering the contribution of environmental risk factors in the burden of diseases, this study aimed to provide new approaches in exposure assessment filed b...
متن کاملRecommendations to improve wildlife exposure estimation for development of soil screening and cleanup values.
An integral component in the development of media-specific values for the ecological risk assessment of chemicals is the derivation of safe levels of exposure for wildlife. Although the derivation and subsequent application of these values can be used for screening purposes, there is a need to identify the threshold for effects when making remedial decisions during site-specific assessments. Me...
متن کاملDeriving site-specific clean-up criteria to protect ecological receptors (plants and soil invertebrates) exposed to metal or metalloid soil contaminants via the direct contact exposure pathway
Soil contaminant concentration limits for the protection of terrestrial plants and soil invertebrates are commonly based on thresholds derived using data from laboratory ecotoxicity tests. A comprehensive assessment has been made for the derivation of ecological soil screening levels (Eco-SSL) in the United States; however, these limits are conservative because of their focus on high bioavailab...
متن کاملMeaning and Methods of Assessment of Soil Health
Soil is a living system and has to be managed as such in agriculture to improve sustainability. Soil health refers to the biological, chemical and physical features of soil that are essential to long-term sustainable agricultural productivity with minimal environmental impact. Thus, soil health provides a overall picture of soil functionality. Soil provides the habitats for a wide range of livi...
متن کاملIntegrating biological indicators in a Soil Monitoring Network (SMN) to improve soil quality diagnosis – a case study in Southern Belgium (Wallonia)
Description of the subject. Soil organisms and their activities are essential for soil ecosystem functioning and they can thus be used as pertinent indicators of soil quality. Recent efforts have been undertaken to include biological indicators of soil quality into regional/national monitoring networks. Objectives. The aim of this study was to provide a first dataset of six biological indicator...
